Types of Texas Hold'em Poker
There are two different kinds of Poker Types when Playing Texas Hold'em Poker Online or in a Casino.
1st Type: Cash Games (Ring Games)
In a Cash Game the stakes are real money. This means, every hand you play, you directly win or lose money. There are different kinds of Cash Games:
Limit Cash Game
Limit Cash Games are very popular with beginners, because one can only raise by a defined amount. Thereby one seemingly can not lose as much money at once as in other kinds of Cash Games. The Limits could be defined at 0.50 $ / 1.00 $ for the Big Blind and the Small Blind. On the Flop the Standard Raise is 1.00 $ (The Size of the Big Blind). On the Turn and the River the Standard Bet is then 2$ (two times the Big Blind). In most games, not more than four Raises are allowed per Betting Round.
No Limit Cash Games
As the name already states, there is No Limit to the amount of money bet in a betting round. The magical words 'All-In' mean, that someone is betting all the money he brought to the table.
Pot Limit Cash Games
At any time, one is not allowed to raise more than the amount of money that already is in the Pot. This sounds quite harmless, but the Pot can grow quickly and usually the average Pot will not be much smaller than in a No Limit Cash Game!
Recommendation of swiss-holdem-poker.com:
If you like Cash Games, play at Pokerroom.com in a Limit Cash Game with Blinds of 0.15$ / 0.30$. If you want to risk slightly more, chose a 0.25$ / 0.50$ Table. In any case, do not start at a higher Limit if you are not very experienced.
If you do not want to risk much money at all, you can chose a soft start to Real Money Poker by playing at a Everest Poker 0.02$ / 0.04$ Cash Game.
2nd Type: Tournaments
In a tournament, you pay your entry fee (for instance 5 + 0.50 $) and receive a fixed amount of Chips to start with. Each player in the Tournament receives the same amount of Starting Chips. If you lose all your chips, you lose and have to quit the tournament. One advantage of playing tournaments is that you know exactly how much money you can maximally lose. The drawback is that it is not always easy to determine how long a tournament will last. You might have lost after 3 minutes or you might be playing for a couple of hours.
In order to limit the Time a tournament lasts, the Blinds become higher in a fixed interval. There are No Limit, Pot Limit and Limit Tournaments, although No Limit Tournaments probably cover 99% of the tournaments played. The most popular kinds of tournaments are described in the Category Tournament Types.
