Harrington on Hold'em Volume 3, Dan Harrington & Bill Robertie
While the first two volumes constitute a unit and need to be read together (volume 2 read without having read volume 1 makes little sense) volume 3 is totally independent. The book is written in the form of a test. Altogether 50 'problems' (hands) are described and in each problem decisions have to be made. Harrington respectively suggests several possible answers, like in a multiple choice exam. According to your answer you get a certain score. Based on your final total score you are classified into one of five categories (from world class to beginner). The problems presented generally cover realistic situations of the game (preflop, on the Flop, Turn, River, bluffing, bubble play, etc.) as encountered in No Limit Texas Hold'em Sit & Go and Multitable tournaments. However, occasionally Harrington expects the reader to know every star player and his manner of play (Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Dan Harrington himself, Freddy Deeb etc.) in order to reach the maximum score. Volume 3 is not necessarily to be recommended as bedtime reading but should rather be worked through with concentration because it is a test. And as it is a test going through it several times makes little sense. You would remember the correct answers, and without understanding why, you’d get the maximum score. Especially positive about this book is the fact that Harrington does not simply distribute points but rather analyzes each situation and gives points according to the learning effect achieved. The book serves not only to gain routine but also at times goes into mathematical detail which can even open the eyes of advanced players. He who has read Harrington on Hold’em Volume 1 and 2 will love this book! Volume 3 can be worked through quite independently of volumes 1 and 2! For absolute beginners this book is not to be recommended because a certain amount of experience at poker is needed in order to be able to follow. However, for those who have already read a book or two about No Limit Texas Hold'em and Sit & Go tournaments an investment in this book could be worthwhile!
