Poker Dos & Don'ts
If after doing the aptitude test you consider yourself to be a possible winner type then here are general 'dos' and 'don'ts' for playing poker. These do not concern strategy tips, but rather basic rules, that should be kept to in order to optimize your success at poker.
1) Never play poker with money which you cannot afford to lose!
2) Never play poker if you are mentally or physically not fit, for example you are ill, tired, drunk, stressed etc.
3) Never play poker if you have a fixed appointment after the game. Sometimes a poker game lasts much longer than originally planned.
4) Never play poker in order to distract yourself from everyday stress. If poker becomes an escape from everyday life then the risk of an addiction to gambling is high.
5) Play with the right stakes (bankroll management!). In Sit & Go single table tournaments you should not put more than about 5-8% of your bankroll on a single tournament! If you have for example $100 on your online account it is advisable not to play Sit & Go Tournament with a Buy-In higher than $5 + 0.50. If you increase your capital to about $150 then you can consider playing a $10 + 1 tournament. However, if you lose money again it is time to take a step back. In multi-table tournaments not more than 2 - 3% of the bankroll should be invested in a single tournament. In No Limit cash games, your resources should be about 300 times that of the largest stake (or raise stake according to Turn and River).
6) Use special bonus offers from online poker providers for your first money transfer. Many poker providers give, for example, 100%
(Pokerstars) or 50% (Pokerroom) bonuses on your first deposit. However, one must play for a while before the bonus is credited to one's account. For successful poker players, however, it is only a matter of time before the bonus is credited. Do not miss out on this extra cash!
7) Find out which tournaments are the most lucrative for your style of game! Many people prefer to play shorthanded tournaments, others prefer full tables etc.
8) Find a suitable poker provider for your style of game. If you are, for example, a heads-up expert it is advisable to use the cheaper game fees at Everestpoker! If tournament games suit you, but playing with Ante not at all, then Pokerroom is probably a better choice.
9) Avoid turbo-tournaments. If you are an above average player minimize the luck factor! The faster the blinds climb (or are raised), the higher the luck factor is!
10) Read poker strategy books! We have book tips under Books, DVDs & More > Poker books.
11) Start early to play 2 tables simultaneously. The more tables which can be simultaneously played successfully the more money one can win per hour!
12) Set yourself a limit on how often you want to play. If you become tired before this limit then do not begin any new games.
13) Practice a lot of heads-up play. Which ever type of tournament you play, at the end always the two remaining persons play heads-up. In these heads-up games one makes the most extra money! Practice heads-up at comparatively "favourable" heads-up providers e.g. Everestpoker.
